August 27th-31st

Dear Second Grade Families,

We had a busy and successful first week of school.  We continue going over classroom routines/rules and our reading and math groups have been running smoothly.  This week we met with our school families to introduce the new students to the SHS family fun.  Our new eighth grade parents did a great job with their “getting to know” activity.  We look forward to another week of learning.

Here are a few highlights for this week:

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT:  WEDNESDAY at 6:30. I am looking forward to meeting all of you on Wednesday.  The meeting will begin in Biedermann Hall.

Friday is noon dismissal.

Homework: HOMEWORK continues this week with nightly reading for 20 minutes and filling out a reading log.  Students must do their own writing in pencil on their reading log . Reading Log is due on Friday’s.  Next week, we will start homework that will include language arts, math and studying spelling words on spellingcity.com.   I will go over homework expectations at Back to School Night on Wednesday.

Math: We begin Unit 1 this week.  We will be reviewing math facts through 12.  We will look at order property (3+5 is the same as 5+3), counting on,  number line & doubles. We will also learn fun games to help become fluent with math facts.

Language Arts: We will be reviewing consonant blends, short/long vowels, and comprehension strategies such as predict/infer, decoding/phonics, questioning and monitor/clarify.

Writing:  writing practice, sentence writing and journaling

Spelling:  We begin spelling Unit 1 this week.  We will be reviewing short a and i.

Challenge words:  sandwich, picnic

Spelling Test will be on Thursday.  We will also have dictation.  Dictation are sentences that will include spelling words/word patterns and sight words that children know.

Religion: We are God’s special gift; Made in His image.  We can THINK, CHOOSE and LOVE.
