Week of January 20-24, 2014

Dear Second Grade Families,

Thank you to all the parents for helping out in our primary center day.  We could not have done it without all of you.

We begin our week with our field trip .  Be sure to ask your child what they learned today on our field trip.  We will celebrate 100 days of school on Wednesday.  Our celebration of 100 days of school  will begin during our math groups and move along into our reading groups.  It will be a fun filled day.  Also, this week we will begin our Catholic Schools week on Friday with a Mass and Parent Appreciation Day.   Please join us in Church at 8:30 a.m.  Refreshments and classroom visits will be after Mass.

Progress reports will go out today.   Please look over the progress report if you have any questions please send me an email.

HERE’S A QUICK LOOK AT OUR WEEK…

Homework: Reading Log, Fluency, IXL  L.6 Input and Output(if your child finishes before 20 minutes, please do S.1 (temperature). Remember homework is due on Monday.

FLAT PERSON UPDATE… It is almost time for Flat Second Graders to return home.  We will be sending letters to our hosts thanking them for their hospitality and their time and energy spent helping your second grader with his/her project.  As soon as our Flat People begin to return, I will send the assignment for this project so you may begin preparing for the School Fair in February.  If you have not sent in your stamp please do so ASAP.

RELIGION: We begin the memorization of the Act of Contrition.  We will be discussing sin and temptation.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

READING:   We will continue with the story ,Boxcar Children, chapter 8-10.   The children are enjoying this series.  We will also be reading our leveled books and phonics library.   We will be doing a KWL chart about Martin Luther King Jr. and read about him.

Students will begin fluency tests this week and next week.  Your child will take home a paper noting their fluency rate by grade level (For example:  2.1 represents 2nd grade 1st month, 2.9 represents 2nd grade 9th month).

SPELLING: We will have no spelling tests this week since our week is short.  I will be giving a spelling inventory test to the students to check mastery of spelling patterns learned so far. This does not count as a test.  It is only an assessment to check for mastery and areas that may need improvement.

MATH: Last week, I sent home Unit 3 math test we took in class.  Please work in the areas your child needs improvement.  Remember you can go on everyday math and download the home links (review class work).

Reminder:  If your child takes a workbook page home, he/she must turn in work the following day.

We will be doing some fun 100’s day activities using money, addition, subtraction and word problems.

We have been working on unit 4 (4.1-4.2).  We will complete 4.2 this week.

SCIENCE: We will continue working on forces (pull/push).

SOCIAL STUDIES: Martin Luther King (little book) and Rosa Parks

I am looking forward to seeing you on Friday.  Be ready to have some fun.  Please let me know if you will NOT be able to attend Parent’s Day.

Have a Beautiful Day,

Mrs. Vazquez
