Dear Second Grade Families,

Enjoy this Thanksgiving with your family and friends!  This Thanksgiving I give thanks for having such a great group of caring students and parents!  I will keep all of you in my prayers during this holiday.  Our week is a short one with Thanksgiving activities and lessons planned for this week.  Next week, we will have parent teacher conferences beginning on Wednesday.  The students will be dismissed at 11:30 from December 4th-6th.  I look forward to seeing you during Parent Teacher Conferences.

Academic Overview:

Homework:  This week we will only have a reading log (I only require 3 days of reading).  I will not require any IXL  or fluency this week. Homework is due Monday, December 2nd.   Please enjoy spending time with your family this holiday weekend.

RELIGION: We will write a Thanksgiving Prayer the next two days including reviewing our first three commandments.

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Reading: A group will be reading, Nate the Great, Talks Turkey.   The other reading group will finish Horrible Harry and the Holidaze.   Reading groups will discuss vocabulary and the story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution) as they read their chapter books.  We will continue reviewing syllables, ABC order, digraphs (sh, th, wh, ch, tch).

We will continue our read aloud, “The Boxcar Children”.  The kids are so involved in the story.  We are working on vocabulary and comprehension.   If your child has a copy of the book at home, he/she may bring it to school to follow along.

Spelling: We do not have new spelling words this week. We will continue practicing spelling patterns we have done the last few weeks.  We will also review sight words with fun games.  We will begin chapter 13 when we return from our Thanksgiving vacation.

Writing:  We will continue writing about small moment.  Our focus is using capital letters, punctuation and having movement and talking in our writing.  We continue to learn to unfreeze our frozen stories.

MATH: We have started using flats(hundreds block), longs (tens blocks) and cubes (0nes cube). Lesson 3.2 is all about money.   Last week, we started the lesson and have found we need a little more practice with money exchange.  We will continue playing some money games this week.  We will start 3.3 when we return on Monday.   Please go onto everyday math to look at the homelinks to have extra practice at home.

Directions:  When you log on to the website EVERYDAY math, you will see on the left hand corner the unit and lesson.  Please click on unit 3 and lesson 1 to see the homelink for that lesson.  If you have any questions, please send me an email.

SOCIAL STUDIES:  ABC’s of the First Thanksgiving (Reader’s Theatre) and Changes for the American Indians (article)

FLAT STUDENTS:  We continue to receive flat mail.  If your child has brought flat mail home, he/she needs to return the mail after you get a chance to read it.  If your child has not received mail, please send your host family an email or give them a call to remind them.

Your child will need two stamps by December 6th.  We are planning on sending two letters in the month of December.

Reminders:

Tuesday:  P.E.

Wednesday:   We have free dress with $1.00 donation or more for the Philippines.  All are welcome to attend Mass at 8:30 a.m.

We will return our library books on Wednesday.
