Dear Second Grade Parents,

It was great to see all you enjoying  the students displays at the School Fair.   We were glad to see  most of our Flat People at our School Fair.  We had two flat students come in on Friday.  We can’t wait to see our two other students soon.  The boards will go home tomorrow.

Reminders:

Wednesday: Stations of the Cross at 2:00

Friday:  Noon Dismissal

Homework:  Reading Log & Common Core Homework….This week we will  NOT have to do the math drill.  We have math review this week in our common core homework.  The math drill will continue next week.  I will NOT expect certificates printed out  but just an initial next to the section your child practiced at the bottom of the reading log (next week).  I will send more information next week when we do the math drill practice.

Here is looking at our week….

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Reading:  We will continue reading Brothers and Sisters. We will focus on the comprehension strategy of evaluation.  We will focus on summarizing our read aloud, Cam Jansen:  The Mystery of the Monster Movie.

Spelling/Phonics/Grammar:  We will not have a spelling test this week.  We are in our review week.  We will focus on long o vowel pairs.  We will review: verbs, nouns, punctuation, two syllable words and ending words with  -er.

Writing:  We will wrap up with our persuasive writing.  We have been working on “How to ”  writing. We are on our rough draft.   The children will begin to type this writing sample during computer time next week.  It may take a while but WE CAN DO IT!    The kids are really excited.

Science: We will continue working with magnets.  This week our emphasis will be on vocabulary such as poles, magnetic field, repel and attraction.

Social Studies:  Using Land is still our area of study.

Art:  Joseph Stella has been our artist of interest.  We will be looking at some of his art work. We will work on an art project and use mixed media as Joseph Stella displayed in his artwork. 🙂

Math:  Review 2-D & 3-D shapes, identifying quadrilaterals, counting edges and vertices on shapes, graphing, word problems, and addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.  I would like to take a moment to give the second graders a “round of applause”  for all the hard work they have been doing learning about two-two digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.  They are finally comfortable with the process and pay close attention to the process of adding and subtracting.  YAY, Second Grade!!!!!! Please look at the Quick Check next week to see how your child is doing in the area of math.  These quick check are like quizzes that show if your child is doing well or needs a little more practice.

Religion:  The gift of the Holy Spirit was our focus last week.  This week we continue preparing for our Reconciliation.

If you have any questions, please send me an email at secondgrade@sacredheartschoolventura.org

Blessings,

Mrs. Vazquez
