Today was an exciting day for fourth graders.  In the morning they found themselves in new seats, most of them in different areas of the room.  (I will change individual seats if needed, but hope to have everyone settled in these new spots for the next several weeks.)  In the afternoon, in music class, they received their new recorders, which should be brought home today and then brought back on Wednesday for music class.

Some students are having difficulty finishing work and handing it in on time. If an assignment is not in the work packet tomorrow, then I have not seen it! Please ask to see everything.

The week ahead:

As always, Reading Logs will be due next Monday.  Students should read for 20-30 minutes every night. Link: 4th Grade Reading Log#1.

As always, students are to complete 3 ixL skills during the coming week.  The skills for this week are P 5, 29 and 30.

This week in Vocabulary we will begin our study of Unit three words.  The words can be accessed on the Vocabulary Workshop website and are in the Vocabulary workbook.  No test this week.

In Spelling we are studying words with long and short “o” sounds, which is unit 4.  We will have a practice test on Thursday and a final test on Friday. We have written the 20 words in our planners.

In Grammar we are learning about compound and complex sentences. We are also correcting fragments and run-on sentences.  We will have a unit 1 test next week (lessons 1-7, through page 35).

In Math we are finishing up work on chapter 1, which covers geometric terms and constructions.  Students may bring their math journals home, using pages 3-27 to help with review.  We will have a test on Thursday.

In Religion we will conclude our study of unit one, which is text pages 3-26d.  We will have a test on unit one concepts on Friday.  I encourage you to help your child review for the test, and as a family to do the activities in the text.

In Social Studies we are reading about the bodies of water in California, and we are reviewing the key terms covered so far in chapter one.

We continue our study of ecosystems in Science, with our focus this week on land ecosystems (rainforest, desert, etc.)

Reading groups continue in their chapter books: reading, discussing, and writing  summaries.

Have a great week!
