Dear Kindergarten Families,

Hope all enjoyed the long weekend!

I am certain you enjoyed looking through the World Book. In the lab we are researching the world of animals and noting interesting facts.  The animals studied live in geographical areas connect to the  landforms in class.  Your child will choose  an animal to research and print out picture and note interesting facts at home. More information will come home later this week.

Our academics: Review the sound of /Ll/ and begin letter /Kk/ , decoding words with short ‘i’ as with the ‘it’ family. Comprehension skills include fantasy/realism; story structure and plot. Our strategies for reading are summarizing, predicting, and evaluating. Math lessons review clock and calendar — chapter test this week. We will begin measurement. In kindergarten we measure with non-standard units and give an ‘about’ measurement. Items we will use are paper clips, cubes, erasers, our hands and feet. This is a fun way to estimate then measure things that are longer or shorter.   We will predict distance, by near and far using a point of reference, such as the ocean and mountains. Much work to do with our landform project and class-made books to coincide with the land structure.
