Fifth grade is in the process of finishing their persuasive essays discussing how racism affected players of Negro League baseball.  This essay is the culmination of reading, research, and discussion for Unit 1.

Next week, beginning Tuesday, October 1st, fifth grade will begin Unit 2 of English Language Arts.   Below is a short summary of the unit.

Fifth Grade Unit 2 “Renaissance Thinking”

Essential question:  “How does creativity change the world?”

This unit focuses on the research process, as well as the creative and critical thinking used by writers, inventors, and famous people from the Renaissance and beyond.

Through the pairing of fiction and nonfiction books on related topics, this unit builds on students’ understanding of the Renaissance as a period of new learning and discovery.

In addition to books read in class, i.e., About Time, A First Look At Time and Clocks, by Bruce Koscielniak, and The Usborne Book of Inventors: From Da Vinci to Biro by Anthony Marks, students will also be reading either a fiction or nonfiction book at home.  Please ask your child to see his or her ELA assignment letter. The letter will be sent home next Tuesday, October 1st.

A group research assignment on an invention from the Renaissance era will be completed both in class and at home.

Unit two ends with an informative/explanatory essay in response to the essential question.

It is such a pleasure to work with Ms. Carney and our wonderful TA’s!
