Dear Parents,                     May 5, 2014

The students did a fantastic job during the May Crowning. It was beautiful and many teachers told me that it brought tears to their eyes!

We have concluded theme 9 and are moving right into our last theme- Theme 10! Our reading strategy this week is predict/infer. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is predicting -using the text, pictures, and our own prior knowledge will help us predict what may happen in the story. Our phonics focus this week is on r-controlled words. This is a vowel + r (such as turn, girl, fern) and the -or and -ore sounds (as in born and store). Our grammar focus is describing what we hear. Our spelling will be a quick review on mixed vowels from Unit 26.

We will continue our unit on geometry by continuing work on shapes and we will even get a chance to create some 3-D shapes…hopefully!

In religion we will turn our focus to Jesus being with us in Church. During our attention on Mary last week the first graders wrote many beautiful prayers to Mary. I hope to post some of these prayers for your viewing. Stay tuned!

We will begin our new unit of study on matter in science! We will begin with solids!

In social studies we will wrap up our unit and take our test later in the week.
