Dear Parents,                     March 7, 2016

This week in first grade, we are learning…

Language Arts Our reading strategy this week is “questioning”. Good readers question before they start reading, as well as, during reading. The comprehension skill that will help is “fantasy/realism”. Using our everyday experiences to determine if events in a story can really happen or if they are make-believe will help us understand the story. Our phonics focus this week is the sound of /oo/ as in moon. This /oo/ sound can be spelled in various ways: oo – moon, ew – stew, ou – soup, ue – blue. We are also working on the long sound of /i/ spelled with ie or igh (as in tie or tight). Please point out these various sounds and spellings in your nightly reading. Our grammar focus this week is using the pronouns he, she, it, and they for naming words.

Spelling: We will be taking the week to review past spelling words. There will not be a test on Thursday.

Math: We are beginning our next unit in math – Geometry! We will begin by going over attributes and an introduction to polygons.

Religion: We will be reading from our Family Life series this week. We will be discussing how we care for ourselves.

Science: In science we are beginning our chapter on weather. We will start with some vocabulary and then jump right in to our first lesson!

Social Studies: We are headed into our new chapter in Social Studies: In and Around the Land. We will be introducing vocabulary words and then into our first lessons about land and water.
