Dear Parents,                     May 2, 2016

This week in first grade, we are learning…

Language Arts: We have concluded theme 9 and are moving right into our last theme- Theme 10! Our reading strategy this week is predict/infer. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is predicting -using the text, pictures, and our own prior knowledge will help us predict what may happen in the story. Our phonics focus this week is on r-controlled words. This is a vowel + r (such as turn, girl, fern) and the -or and -ore sounds (as in born and store). Our grammar focus is describing what we hear.

Spelling: This week, we will be doing a lesson that does not come from our book. These are words that practice our r-controlled vowels. Our homework for Tuesday and Wednesday will be 6 Sentences. The first six words are to be used in a sentence for Tuesday’s homework – the other six words are to be used in a sentence for Wednesday’s homework.

Math: We are working on unit 9. This week, we are focusing on number grids, adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers and fractional parts of a whole.

Religion: We will be reading from our religion books this week: Mary is the Mother of the Church. We will also be receiving our May Crowning packets tomorrow. Please take some time to practice reading lines with your child.

Science: In science we are learning about matter!

Social Studies: We will not be able to have a chance to continue on this week, as we will be practicing for the May Crowning.
