Dear Parents,                          October 31, 2016

We are doing A LOT in first grade this week….

Language Arts: In Readers Workshop we will be focusing on how to check our reading for mistakes and how to determine difficult words. In Writers Workshop we are working on making our writing fancy. In addition, we will also be focusing on specific phonetic skills. This week, we will be focusing on clusters with r (creepy, drip, trip) and contractions (he’s, where’s, it’s). Our spelling words will be practicing the clusters with r and will come from Unit 13 in our books.

Math: We will practice adding and subtracting on our calculators as well as begin our introduction to dimes.

Science: We are wrapping up our work on animals. This week we will learn a bit about bats and take our science test. We will also have a special science lab with the sixth graders – we will dissect owl pellets!

Social Studies: We are looking at our Thanksgiving story and will begin a special Thanksgiving project.

Religion: This week we are focusing on our Saints. We will be spending the first half of the week memorizing our report (a copy of this went home on Friday- Please see the red homework folder). The second half of our week will be spent in church practicing for our parade. Please send your child to school in their saint’s costume on Friday. Students may wear PE clothes under their costume.
