Dear Parents,                          February 6, 2017

Here is what first graders are doing this week…

Language Arts: We are working on going through our informative writing checklist this week. We are asking ourselves what we need to make better and what we are already doing well. In phonics this week, we are focusing on the vowel pairs “ai” and “ay”. As we practice the vowel pairs, remind your child, “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking!” We have a trick to decide how to spell these ai/ay words. If the long /a/ sound is found in the middle of the word, the word is usually spelled with “ai”. If the long /a/ sound is found at the end of the word, it is usually spelled with “ay”. Our spelling words come from Unit 27 and will focus on the vowel pairs “ai” and “ay”.

Math: We are practicing our addition and subtraction strategies, learning about the centimeter and explore geoboards and pattern blocks!

Science: We are still on our little break from Science as we continue work on our school fair project.

Social Studies: We are in the middle of our travels! We are headed to two (hopefully three) countries this week!

Religion: This week we are working from our textbook – Chapter 16: Jesus Teaches Us to Love Others.
