Dear Parents,                          March 13, 2017

First graders were working very hard on their works for the Palmisano Writing Contest. I would like to first congratulate the finalists for the Palmisano Writing Contest: Drake, Savannah, Nicholas, Danicka, and Kaitlyn. We will have a special assembly on March 19, where these and other finalist will be recognized and the winners will be announced. We will keep our fingers crossed!

Here is what first graders are doing this week…

Language Arts: We are beginning our new unit on opinion writing! In order to do this, I am asking for your help! Please help your child gather a collection of 5-7 pieces. A collection can be dolls, Pokemon cards, toy trucks/cars, photographs of animals, etc. Please send in the collections by Wednesday. In phonics this week, we are focusing on the vowel pairs ou/ow. These vowel pairs can make the long o sound as in show or the /oo/ sound as in soup. However, this week we are focusing on the sound as in down and around.

Our new spelling words are not from our Spelling book. This week we have a special spelling assignment on Tuesday and Wednesday: 6 Sentences. Here are the directions! On Tuesday, students pick 5 basic words and 1 challenge word. For each word, students must write 1 complete sentence for a total of 6 sentences. These sentences are to be written in our Spelling Journal. On Wednesday, the same process takes place. However, the words must be the 5 remaining basic words and 1 remaining challenge word. We will be doing an example in class on Tuesday and then again on Wednesday.

Math: We are in Unit 8 this week! We will start our week reviewing money and will be practicing our place value by the end of the week!

Science: We are still working from Chapter 4: Kinds of Environments. We are discussing what lives in a mountain environment.

Social Studies: We are in the beginning lessons of Unit 4. This week we are focusing on our resources and identifying land and water on maps.

Religion: We are learning from our Family Life Series this week!
