Dear Parents,                               August 24, 2015

It was wonderful seeing many of you at Back-to-School Night! Thank you for your constant support of SHS! To those whose schedules prevented you from attending, if you have any questions please be sure to email me and keep a watchful eye on our weekly newsletters!

Here’s what we are doing in first grade this week!

Language Arts: We continue to work on Kindergarten Review. We will be reviewing letter names, sounds associated with these letters, and how to print these letters.

Writing: We will begin our Writers Workshop this week. This week, we will focus on how to plan our stories before we write!

Math: We will work on comparing numbers, recording tally marks, probability, and how to read a calendar! There will be homework this week in math. If a worksheet page is indicated as homework it will be in the red homework folder. The homework must be returned and turned in the following day.

Social Studies: We will preview our vocabulary and begin our first lesson: We Learn at School!

Science: We will preview the vocabulary for our first chapter on plants. We will be going to the science lab this week.

Religion: We are on to our second chapter! This week we are learning that God is Good! We will also discuss the story of creation.

Homework:

  • Monday: Math Worksheet & Read for 20 minutes
  • Tuesday: Read for 20 minutes
  • Wednesday: Math Worksheet & Read for 20 minutes
  • Thursday: Math Worksheet & Read for 20 minutes

Announcements:

  • Your children did a wonderful job returning their red homework folder and daily planner to school every day last week.  Please make sure to sign each day (where there is room!) indicating that you have checked their homework.
  • Remember to read 20 minutes each night during the week and twice over the weekend. Please do not forget to record it on the Reading Log and return to school each day!
  • We will visit the school library Tuesday and will check out a book.  As a reminder, the children can bring their books home but they MUST be returned to school each Tuesday in order for them to check out a new book.
  • Remember PE uniforms on Tuesday! Please make sure that long hair is pulled back and all students are wearing tennis shoes.
  • As a reminder, if your child cannot tie their own shoes, your student must wear Velcro shoes. Please see our school handbook for more information regarding dress code or the classroom handbook you received on Back-to-School Night.
  • Friday is a noon-dismissal day.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful week!

Ms. Manning
