Dear Parents,                          January 3, 2017

I hope all had a wonderful Christmas break with family and friends.

In first grade we are jumping right back in! Here’s what we are learning…

Language Arts: We will be starting our new writing unit on informative writing. In addition, we are working on a lot of phonics! This week we are focusing on diagraphs – two or three letters that when put together, create a new sound. These diagraphs sound scary, but we already know most of them! Diagraphs include /sh/, /th/, /wh/, /ch/, and /tch/. It is important to remember that these diagraphs can be found in the beginning or ending of words! Our spelling unit is 17 and focuses are our diagraphs /sh/ and /ch/.

Math: We are beginning Unit 5! We begin by learning about place value. We will be spending a good deal of this week working on base ten blocks.

Science: We are in our third chapter about living things and their needs! Our main discussion will center on animal shelters.

Social Studies: We are working from our unit -Living in a Community. We will be reading about the post office and about various community leaders.

Religion: This week we are discussing the Holy Family within Chapter 12.

Homework for the Week: (Don’t forget to read every night!)
