Hello Third Grade Families,

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope everyone enjoyed the break resting and relaxing among friends.

This week we will hit the ground running.

Math: We begin Chapter 5: Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals. This week will focus on very large numbers (up to the millions). Later in the chapter we will get small with an introduction to decimals.

IXL Math Skills Homework:

B.3 Place Value Names up to Hundred-Thousands

G.3 Multiplication Facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 & 10

K.1 Division Facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 & 10

Reading: We are back in action with our small groups. This week’s lessons will focus on comparing and contrasting within and between texts. This is a great way of moving past personal connections and on toward inter/intratextual ones. Students should be able to compare how a character was at the beginning of a story with the end, tracking an evolution. Click here to see the Parent Pipeline.

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner & online on SpellingCity.com. Our next spelling test is scheduled for Friday.

Vocabulary: We will begin Unit 7, planning to finish with a quiz next Friday.

Grammar: We will begin Unit 3: Verbs!

Writer’s Workshop: The class will move on to a new genre of writing: Information (non-fiction) writing. Students will be asked to identify themselves as “experts” in a given area. Take some time this week to think and discuss what your child knows a lot about. A sport? An animal? Maybe a series of books? Or how about skill like cooking or sewing?

Science: Mr. Rzasa is back in the lab Tuesday morning! We will also begin to wrap up our unit on states of matter.

Religion: The class will begin Chapter 11: God Sent His Son Jesus to Live Among Us. We will also celebrate epiphany.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
