Please plan to attend the School Fair on Wednesday evening, February 22, to see all class & individual projects on display in Biedermann Hall. The judging of the 8th grade Science projects takes place during that school day and the winning projects will be marked. Below is a description of each class’s project for this year:

Kindergarten is learning about animals in winter.

Focus is on migration, hibernation and adaption in North America and the Polar Regions.

First grade is traveling around the world! Students have packed their suitcases, made their passports, and have their tickets ready! The first graders plan to travel to ten countries learning about different languages and cultures, At the School Fair, they will be showcasing their suitcases packed full of international knowledge.

Second grade is working on “How to Write Like a Scientist.”  We are growing plants and using the scientific method.  Students will also complete an “ALL ABOUT ME” poster to display in the Hall.

Third grade is taking the stage again, this year participating with a class Periodic Table of Elements! In order to include all 118 elements, each student will be contributing four to five pieces of the puzzle. Each piece will be on an 8 ½ x 11” piece of paper and include items collected by students including: photos, samples, maps, drawings and other items associated with that element.

Fourth grade is preparing California mission presentations. Students have learned about their missions by reading books, researching on the Internet, and in many cases, actually visiting the mission. Students were given the choice of building a model of the mission, putting together a scrapbook, or doing a video tour of the mission. Each student is also preparing an informational poster about the mission.

Fifth grade is choosing one person to complete a report on who they feel has made a great contribution to the sciences, arts, or sports. The students also are selecting a country, and are analyzing the events that occurred in that county during the lifetime of their person.

6th grade is exploring the essential question: How do we decide who we are?

For their project they are choosing a person in their family who has contributed to their cultural makeup. Through interviews and research, they are acquiring an understanding of their focus person’s culture and reflecting on the influence this person has had on their lives. Their final product is a 2-3 page informative essay that explores the culture of their focus person, and a display board that illustrates the culture of their focus person. The focus of this activity is on cultural not biological heritage.

7th grade is completing a project that combines History and Religion. The meaning of social justice in the Catholic faith is discussed, and then students research different issues affecting our world; they then choose a topic and country they are interested in for the report. The final product is a display board with information on the topic, a report on the history of the country, a Bible story that relates to the issue, and ideas for the student and the Catholic Church to help the country and people.

8th grade is competing in a science fair.  They pick a topic of interest, write a research paper and design and follow through with an experiment to test their hypothesis following the scientific method.
