The middle school has been busy in the science lab!  6th grade is studying the earth – from an edible lab modeling the Earth’s layers to creating oobleck which has unique characteristics and acts as both a solid and a liquid just like the Earth’s asthenosphere.  We’ve also used clay to model the layers of the Earth and observe what happens when rock undergoes tension and compression.

7th grade has been studying DNA.  We’ve been studying our fingerprints, made edible models of DNA and even extracted DNA from strawberries.

8th graders have been studying density by making a density column and dropping various items into the liquids and  we’ve calculated density by measuring the displacement of water from submerged objects. We recently took a lab test applying our understanding of the formula for density and the laws of buoyancy by making one 100g ball of clay sink and another 100g ball of clay float.
