Welcome back to school, and Happy 2018! We will spend this week getting back into our routines, reviewing what we had been studying in late November and early December.

THE WEEK AHEAD:

HOMEWORK (due next Monday): Students will be finishing work on ixL Math skills T 2 and T 3, as well as Language skill D 8. We started work on these skills in class on December 19th. We are doing fluency #16, and students should be reading non-fiction selections for 20-30 minutes per night.

DAILY WORK

Religion: Before Christmas, we finished Unit 2 and did the review work in our books. We will continue to review in class, with the goal of doing the test on Thursday. Click here for another copy of the study guide. unit two study sheet

Math: We continue work on Unit 4, which focuses upon decimals.

Reading Workshop: We continue our unit on non-fiction reading. At home, students should be reading informative books, or occasionally non-fiction articles from magazines such as Sports Illustrated for Kids, National Geographic for Kids, or Highlights. The majority of the reading should be from books, and we will only read from books during class time.

Writing Workshop: We continue our unit on opinion writing. We will be selecting topics in the coming week or so.

Spelling: We are working on unit 15; there will be a test, but not until next week. The School Spelling Bee has been moved to January 19th. I finished the class tryouts today. Congratulations to our five finalists: Nicholas, Andy, Grace, Mariah and Joseph.

Vocabulary: This week we continue our work on Unit 7; the test will be on Friday. Students have a set of index cards to help them with preparation for the test.

Grammar: We continue work in unit 3, with the focus on Verbs.

Science: This week we continue learning about the properties of minerals.

Social Studies: We continue our study of the early Spanish explorers, with missions being our next topic! Fourth graders will soon begin gathering information about the mission of their choice. In order to prepare materials, I need to know which mission your child has selected. Please let me know (via email), as this is our focus for the School Fair, which will be on March 14th.
