THE WEEK AHEAD:

Welcome back, and welcome to the second trimester. Work packets will be coming home tomorrow. We will have a half-day on Friday. Students will bring home grocery bags this week for the St. Vincent de Paul food drive, which will be held next week, from December 4th through the 8th.  Next Wednesday, December 6th is our Teddy Bear Day; we ask that each child bring a new stuffed animal to be given to needy children through the Adopt-a-Family program, which we support through our fundraising efforts during the first trimester. We also send candy, so if you still have some uneaten Halloween candy, in plain wrappers, you may bring it to the office on or before the 6th as well.

HOMEWORK (due next Monday): Students will be doing ixL Math skills D 30 and O 6, as well as Language skill D 12. We are doing fluency #14, and students should be reading non-fiction selections for 20-30 minutes per night.

DAILY WORK

Religion: We continue our study of the 10 Commandments.

Math: We are finishing up work on Unit 3; we will have the test on Wednesday or Thursday.

Reading Workshop: We begin our unit on non-fiction reading. At home, students should be reading informative books, or occasionally non-fiction articles from magazines such as Sports Illustrated for Kids, National Geographic for Kids, or Highlights. The majority of the reading should be from books, and we will only read from books during class time.

Writing Workshop: We are finishing up work on our realistic fiction stories; we will share our stories with others during a small celebration in class later this week.

Spelling: Our focus this week is Unit 14; we will have the test on Friday

Vocabulary: This week we begin work on Unit 7; the test will be next Friday.

Grammar: We continue work in unit 3, with the focus on Verbs.

Science: This week we will begin a unit on rocks and minerals.

Social Studies: We have finished our study of early Native Americans. This week we start learning about the early explorers in California. We then turn our focus to the mission system. Students need to select a mission to study, in preparation for our project for the School Fair, to be held on February 21st. Once you have decided, please send me an email confirming your child’s choice of mission.

Thanking you for your continuing support,

Mrs. Mary Dwyer
