Dear Second Grade Families,

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday and weekend. There are many things to do in the 3 weeks before Christmas vacation.
Today begins the second trimester of our school year!!
Teddy Bear and Friends Day is Tuesday, December 7.
St. Nicholas Day is Monday, December 6. If you don’t celebrate this at home, now is a good time to start. It is fun.
Flat People update: We are receiving mail almost daily. Ask your child if he/she has received mail. You may need to make a reminder phone call. Our next mailing will be for Christmas.
December Homework Calendar will go home Wednesday, December 1, and it will be due when we return on January 3, 2011. Please keep these in a safe place. Book-It for December will also be due in January when we return from Christmas vacation. Remember, reading is very important! (Please use the correct paper for the calendar and spelling activities and have a stapler for home use).
Christmas Program is Wednesday, December 15. Mrs. Lyle is practicing hard with the students. There should be a costume and supply note soon
HOMEWORK: Please proof your child’s homework with him/her before signing it. Don’t just assume that it was done with great effort and neatness.

IN THE CLASSROOM…
RELIGION: first week of Advent (Jesus is the reason for the season); we will be learning about St. Nicholas (feast day is Monday, December 6), and making shoes to be left out for Monday, December 6 …hopefully St. Nick will be around to put surprises in them. Wednesday, December 8th, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. It is a holy day of obligation, and we will be attending Mass as a school. Friday, December 3, is an all-school Mass celebrating the first Friday of the month. We will be attending Mass and learning more about God’s plan. Our saint for the month is St. Juan Diego (feast day is December 9) We will also continue learning about and practicing love and respect for others and ourselves.
LANGUAGE ARTS: Reading for comprehension and fluency; long and short vowels in phonics; Spelling more words with “long a” sounds; Dictionary and thesaurus work; ABC order; vocabulary development; Christmas language arts.
