Dear Second Grade Families,
Yeah!!! the testing is over and now we can progress with all second grade work all of the time. Some second grade activities were put on hold to accommodate the many tests that were needed. This week is a full week with five full days!
Please remember the note concerning food not being brought to school, especially for birthdays.  We will still recognize birthdays in the classroom with song, certificate, calendar date and something to make for the Birthday Bulletin Board. Save your special treats for non-school celebrations. Also as mentioned at Back to School night, if your child is having a party and is inviting all classmates he/she can bring invitations to school to pass out. Or also, if your child is a girl and all the girls are invited, or a boy and all the boys are invited, then invitations can be brought to school. If you are only inviting a few, please use the roster and mail these out.
SPELLING ACTIVITIES are coming home this week, as unit 6 is a review week. Please read the directions thoroughly. The assignment will be due next Monday. Please try to do a little each night and do not wait until Sunday. This will not be fun!!!
READING LOGS will continue in the simple form. Books to be read should be ones that your child can read aloud to an adult. By this time, most second graders should be beyond beginning readers (please ask if you need some suggestions).
If the paper gets lost or misplaced, please make one using binder paper. This is better than not turning one in at all.
FLAT PEOPLE continue to be in production. We will work on them again this week.
RELIGION: We are still discussing Baptism and ways we belong to God’s Church; God speaks to us through the Bible, the Old Testament (stories about God’s plan for all people) and New Testament (stories of Jesus and the early Church). Jesus speaks to us about God’s love. SAINTS are people who heard God speaking to them. Look for your child’s saint assignment next week. This will be the same saint for our famous SAINTS’PARADE in November.
LANGUAGE ARTS: We will begin the last silly story, “Mrs. Brown Went to Town”. We will be predicting outcomes, reading for fluency and comprehension, more realism/fantasy; long and short vowel review in phonics; multi-meaning words; spelling will be unit 6, a review unit (look for the assignment in the homework folder), creative writing, handwriting, reading log.
MATH: Subtraction facts to 20 and the related addition facts. You can help your child memorize the facts by spending a few minutes each day with practice.
SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE: Communities, neighborhoods; plant cycles

Have a good week,
Mrs. Danforth and Mrs. Vazquez
