Dear Parents,                                                     February 14, 2011

Happy Valentine’s Day!  We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day today in language arts with a writing activity (check your red folder tonight!), in math with candy hearts, and this afternoon with a party!

Our reading strategy this week is predict/infer and the comprehension skill that will help with that strategy is predicting.  Taking time to look through what we are going to read, to look at titles or pictures and predict what the story will be about can help us understand the story better.  Stop while reading, predict what a character might do or what events might take place – see if you can infer what will happen next or what is most likely to happen.  Our phonics focus is the long /a/ sound spelled with the vowel pairs ai or ay, as in sail or day.  Our spelling words this week are from unit 27 and I have posted them to spellingcity.com.  Don’t forget to go online and practice.  Our grammar focus is on naming words for one or more than one.  We will also be working on a George Washington and Abraham Lincoln writing project this week in honor of President’s Day.

Math this week, finds us learning to estimate and compare numbers.  In religion we are learning how we can show God that we love Him.  We will have a science test today and then concentrate on social studies for a couple of weeks as we prepare for our school fair project.  Our social studies unit is In and Around Our Community and we will be creating a community out of recycled materials – more information to come regarding this in-class project.

Please remind your child to bring their library book to school tomorrow so that they may check out a new one.

Water bottle sales continue on Tuesday and Thursday.  Thank you for your support!

There is no school Friday or next Monday – enjoy the long President’s Day Weekend!

Have a wonderful week.  If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Mrs. Manning
