Hello Third Grade Families!

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and all were able to take a moment to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King.

This week in class…

Math: This week we continue with very large numbers, comparing populations of large cities on a map and learning about the US Census.

IXL Homework this week:

B.1 Place Value Models up to the Thousands

B.7 Convert from Expanded Form

Reader’s Workshop: In reading, we will work on grasping the main idea of non-fiction texts. This can be especially challenging for many third graders. It requires that students categorize information as they read, stopping periodically and organizing what they’ve just read. This is a GREAT skill to work on at home if you are exploring non-fiction texts.

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling test is scheduled for Friday.

Grammar: We will begin Unit 2 with a review of nouns.

Writer’s Workshop: Students are now drafting their first chapters of our informational texts. Up until now we have collected and organized information. Now we’re writing, writing, writing. Many students struggle here, as their instinct is to list or copy mentor texts. If you have time, would recommend working at home on some drafts, aiming for length of prose so that when it comes to revising students have more material and ideas to work with.

Science: This week we will continue with the solar system, now taking a closer look at the Inner Planets.

Religion: We begin Chapter 12: Jesus Revealed the Kingdom of God.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
