Dear Parents,                                                     February 13, 2012

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day on Tuesday with a party in the afternoon put on by our room parents! I am looking forward to it almost as much as the students as we will be able to use the mailboxes we made as we concluded our lesson on the Post Office! In addition a big thank you to the parents who donated tissue to our classroom!

Our reading strategy this week is predict/infer and the comprehension skill that will help with that strategy is predicting.  Taking time to look through what we are going to read, to look at titles or pictures and predict what the story will be about can help us understand the story better.  Stop while reading, predict what a character might do or what events might take place – see if you can infer what will happen next or what is most likely to happen.  Our phonics focus is the long /a/ sound spelled with the vowel pairs ai or ay, as in sail or day.  Our spelling words this week are from unit 27 and I will be posting them to spellingcity.com on Monday. Don’t forget to go online and practice.  Our grammar focus is on naming words for one or more than one.

Math this week, finds us wrapping up Chapter 5 and moving right into Chapter 6 on Thursday with Learning to count on to add. In religion we are learning how we can show God that we love Him.  We are continuing our brand new unit in science on the weather.  Our social studies unit is In and Around Our Community and we will begin talk on creating a community out of recycled materials for our school fair– more information to come regarding this in-class project.
