Hello Third Grade Families!
Wednesday is another free dress day. Please bring $1 (or more!) to benefit the Adopt-a-Family Program. If you have any questions on what to wear, please see our school handbook’s (section 46, pages 52-55) on school appropriate free dress attire. http://sacredheartschoolventura.org/our-school/handbook/
Friday is our first Intermediate Centers day. The students will now be intermingled with grades four and five as we rotate from class to class working on topical activities.
This week we begin Unit 3: Linear Measures and Area.
For IXL homework this week, please complete the following Third Grade Skills…
BB.3 Measure using an inch ruler
BB.4 Which customary unit of length is appropriate
BB.21 Choose the appropriate measuring tool
READING: Students are doing an outstanding job of reading 100+ minutes every week. Bravo! Keep turning in those logs every Tuesday.
This week in class we move from making higher-level predictions to retelling stories. As you read, try and have your child retell the story to you. A solid retell will tell what happened (including the most important parts), in order with a clear how and why. Note: this skill is part of our guided reading assessments and is well worth regular practice.
Curricular Spotlight: MATH
Unit 3 is all about linear measurement! Whether it be with a ruler or a non-standard unit of measure, we will cover both customary (inch, foot, yard, mile) and metric (millimeter, centimeter, decimeter, meter, kilometer). Oftentimes moving from one system of measurement to another requires something of a brain shift for students, so I would highly recommend working with your child at home to reinforce these skills and concepts. Focus on measuring to the nearest whole, half and quarter unit emphasizing the fact that measuring to the nearest half or quarter does not mean that 1/2 or 1/4 must appear in the answer.
Have a great week!
