Hello Third Grade Families,

Happy Tuesday everyone! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend and all were able to take a moment to reflect on the legacy of Rev. Martin Luther King.

This week will be cold and a little wet, so please remember to send your kiddos to school with a school sweater and/or jacket every morning.

Math: We will continue Chapter 5: Place Value in Whole Numbers and Decimals, now turning our focus toward very small number: decimals.

IXL Math Skills Homework:

AA.1 What decimal # is illustrated?

AA.6 Order decimals

K.3 Division Facts for 2, 3, 4, 5 & 10: Sorting

Reading: This week there are two comprehension strategies of focus: 1. Ask someone to define the word (Click here to see the Parent Pipeline) & 2. Flip the sound (Click here to see the Parent Pipeline). Keep in mind that in order for either of these strategies to be used successfully, students need to be self-monitoring their reading. In other words, students actually have to stop and identify words their cannot define or decode. These are both great strategies for students who tend to just read over or past challenging words.

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling test is scheduled for next Thursday.

Vocabulary: We will finish Unit 7 and begin Unit 8.

Grammar: Students will be learning all about Present-Tense Verbs in Lessons 16 & 17. Go online to the Grammar Workshop website in order to access more practice and study opportunities.

Writer’s Workshop: Now that we’ve organized our informational text into chapters or “sub-topics,” this week the class will learn about different ways to structure non-fiction chapters. We will explore cause/effect, problem/solution, compare/contrast, pro/con, part/total. We will also learn about some other elements commonly featured in information writing: quotations, lists, descriptions, labels, vocabulary words, etc. As you read this week, encourage your child to explore texts on the subject (s)he has identified being an expert in and will write about.

Science: We continue to learn all about the solar system.

Social Studies: Wednesday morning we welcome guest docents from the Museum of Ventura County. They will teach us all about Chumash food and technology as we kick off our study of local Native American culture.

Religion: The class will begin Chapter 12: Jesus Revealed the Kingdom of God.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
