Dear Parents,                                     May 7, 2012

We have concluded theme 9 and are moving right into our last theme- Theme 10! Our reading strategy this week is predict/infer. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is predicting -using the text, pictures, and our own prior knowledge will help us predict what may happen in the story. Our phonics focus this week is on r-controlled words. This is a vowel + r (such as turn, girl, fern) and the -or and -ore sounds (as in born and store). Our grammar focus is describing what we hear. As we finished our spelling book this past week, we will begin reviewing all words we have learned within first grade through various activities and games to be played in the classroom. There will be worksheets for homework on occasion.

We will continue our chapter on geometry in math by jumping into fractions and symmetry! In religion we will turn our focus to our different families as we use our Family Life series. We will bring our study of matter in science to a close and in social studies we continue our study of Our World Near and Far through our Restaurants Around the World activity that your children have been working hard on! Each student was placed into a group that had the job of creating a menu of three food items from an assigned country. The menu had to be complete with prices and pictures. We will have a chance to “visit” all of these restaurants on Tuesday using our money skills to order some delicious food- from tacos to zweibelkuchen! I’m already hungry!
