Dearest Third Grade Families,

Welcome back! I hope everyone enjoyed the break and was able to rest up as this week we hit the ground running.

Our next field trip is almost here! On May 7th, the third grade class will be going to the Chumash Indian Museum in Thousand Oaks. Permission slips with further details have been e-mailed to you and should be signed and returned no later than Friday. It promises to be a great trip!

This week we’ll be studying the following:

Math: The class will continue Unit 8 (Fractions!) covering lessons 8.5 Equivalent Fractions, 8.6 Comparing Fractions and 8.7 Fractions Greater than One.

This can be a challenging unit so, as always, I would encourage you to follow along with us by completing the “Home Links” at www.everydaymathonline.com. Your child’s username and password can be found in his/her planner.

Our Unit 8 math test is tentatively scheduled for next Thursday, May 8th.

Likewise, we continue to practice our multiplication and division facts. Take a look in your child’s planner for the latest progress report and individual goal. As a reminder, this is part of the nightly homework.

For IXL math homework, please complete the following Third Grade skills:

S.13 Order Fractions with Like Denominators

S. 15 Fractions of a Number

S.4 Fractions on a Number Line

(We covered this material before we left for break, so don’t be surprised if your child needs some time to review.)

Reading & Writing: Poems for the annual SHS Speech Contest are due Monday 4/28 (today). Reminders were sent Sunday afternoon via e-mail along with another copy of the directions. Each student must turn in a typed copy of his or her poem with the title and your child’s name clearly written at the top upon our return from Easter vacation.

English: The class will begin Unit 5: Pronouns with Lessons 34 (Subject Pronouns) & 35 (Pronoun-Verb Agreement). Additional practice and exercises are always available at the Grammar Workshop website.

Spelling: Click here to download this week’s spelling words and pattern/principle. Don’t forget that the words for every unit are also available on www.spellingcity.com. Here you can find fun games and an interactive online practice test.

Vocabulary: This week we begin Unit 16. Our next vocabulary quiz will be next Friday. As a reminder, all words as well as activities and a practice quiz can be found at the Vocabulary Workshop website.

Science: We will begin our study of life science with Chapter 1, “Adaptations to Land and Water” with Lessons 1 and 2: Biomes.

Social Studies: The class will learn more resources within our state.

Religion: We will begin Chapter 16 – Jesus is Risen. Click here for the chapter Study Guide. Our chapter quiz will be next Thursday.

Have a great week!
