Dear Third Grade Families,

This Friday is our first of three upcoming field trips! On this day, grades K-8 will be going on a schoolwide trip to the Ojai Storytelling Festival. Students should arrive at school on time Friday morning dressed in their school uniforms. We plan to be back in time for lunch here at school, so there is no need to pack anything out of the ordinary.

Next week we will be going on our second trip, this time to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History on the 8th. If you have not turned in your permission slip, please do so as soon as possible. Again, students will be wearing their regular school uniforms. We plan to be there most of the day, so a sack lunch will be necessary.

As for this week’s academic happenings, see below:

Math: Having completed Chapter 4 on Friday, we are now moving on to Chapter 7 – geometry! Keep in mind that we plan to revisit measurement in this chapter, particularly when we reach area and perimeter. For this week though, we will turn our attention to naming and classifying plane figures.

Language Arts: Last week we wrapped up our study of poetry. Now, we are moving on to our next chapter book: Laura Ingalls Wilder’s The Little House in the Big Woods. This is the first in the Little House series and many students have already gotten a head start on the series as it is a high interest novel. This week, we plan to introduce the author and begin to ground ourselves in the period as this is historical fiction. Most students already have their copies. However, if you do not, please find one this week. There are several here in our school library and plenty can be found at either your local public library or bookstore.

T-3 Reading Log

Spelling & Vocabulary

In writing, we continue to refine our personal narratives. The students are especially enthusiastic right now about focusing their writing on “small moments.”

In language, we will work on using quotation marks in dialogue.

Science: On Monday, we will take the Chapter 5 test thus closing the book on Earth Science and moving on to Life Science (chapter 1).

Social Studies: We will be learning more about the Chumash people focusing on social organization and religious beliefs.

Religion: We move on to Chapter 17, “Jesus is Lord and King.” The plan is to finish the chapter this week and take a quiz next Monday. We will also attend the May crowning in the church on Thursday.

All the Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
