Dear Third Grade Families,

Tomorrow is our field trip to the Santa Barbara Sea Center! Be sure to pack your son or daughter a lunch. A paper sack lunch or your child’s regular lunch box is fine. We will be leaving in the morning, so be sure to arrive at school on time. We will not have time for snack, so I suggest making sure your child has a healthy breakfast. We will be building up quite an appetite with hands-on explorations. Finally, please send your child in his/her regular SHS uniform.

On Friday, we will be joining grades K-2 on a trip to the Ojai Storyteller’s Festival. For this trip, we are scheduled to return before lunchtime. Therefore, there is no need to pack a special lunch. As indicated on the permission slip, we will be wearing our regular school uniforms as well.

Congratulations to our 5 finalists in the SHS Poetry Contest. Although it was hard to narrow it down to just five, these students did an outstanding job. They will be presenting their poems again at our school speech assembly this Thursday at 10:30.

In terms of academics, here’s what we’re looking at for this week:

Math: We will begin Chapter 7 – Geometry — starting with lines, segments, rays and angles. We will also learn the three different types of angles (right, acute, obtuse) as well as review plane figures.

Language Arts: Spelling – Unit 30 is a review unit covering #25-29. Grammar – We will finish suffixes/prefixes on Monday and prepare to take a closer look at verbs. Reading – We will finish Otis’s Scientific Experiment. Writing – The class will begin to distinguish between main ideas and details as we prepare for paragraphing.

Science: The class will take an in-depth look at aquatic habitats at the Sea Center!

Social Studies: We will learn some of the stories behind important national landmarks.

Religion: We will continue with our Family Life series focusing on making good choices even when it is difficult to do so.

Have a great week!

-Mrs. Espinosa
