Dear Parents,              May 11, 2014

Happy Mother’s Day! I hope you all enjoyed your Mother’s Day gift!

We are continuing on with Theme 10.  Our reading strategy this week is summarizing. The comprehension skill that will help us with this is sequence of events. The ability to organize our thoughts through what happens and when in our story helps us summarize the main ideas of the story we are reading. Our phonics focus this week continues to be on r-controlled words but with a focus on ar, as in star and hard. Our grammar focus is on describing words- taste, smell, and feel. We will not have a new unit for spelling but instead will be practicing how to spell words with ar.

In math we will wrap up our unit on geometry! This was a shorter unit for us but the students have done well! We will practice a bit more with 3-dimensional shapes and their proper names and our test will be on Friday.

In social studies we will begin our final unit – My World Near and Far. This is a great unit exploring different countries and customs! I can’t wait to begin!

In science we are working through our final unit on matter! We will be focusing on liquids this week as solids were last week!

In religion we will learn how the Holy Spirit helps the church.

We have our speech contest winners! They are: Gianna P., Livia C., Joshua O., Mikaella L., and Hope D.! Congratulations!!
