Dear Third Grade Families,

Mark your calendars! This Thursday is our final field trip to the Museum of Ventura County where we will study the Chumash people. As a general reminder, no student may attend a class field trip without a signed permission slip. Parent permission may not be given over the telephone. Students should wear their PE uniforms. Also, there is no need to pack a special lunch as we’ll be back by noon.  It promises to be a great day!

This Friday is our school Jog-A-Thon. Please remember to turn in your envelopes. On this day, students should wear their PE uniforms as well as comfortable running shoes.

Wednesday we welcome a visiting art teacher from the Ventura County Children’s Festival of the Arts. We will be learning all about early photography in “Printing with the Sun” in the science lab.

This Wednesday is also free dress day. Students should bring $1 should they choose to participate.

The Spring musical is fast approaching. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 22nd at 6:30. The show will take place in the Hall and promises to be a hit! More information on costuming and arrival times will follow.

This week we plan to study the following:

Math: This week we will continue with geometry, focusing on finding the perimeter and area of various plane figures. This will require knowledge of fractions and measurement, so we will review key concepts in these areas as well. Please note: We will not have Accelerated Math this Wednesday through next Tuesday as Mrs. Keegan, our Accelerated Math aide, will be out. Instead, take these extra minutes to enjoy the sunshine!

Language Arts:

Spelling Unit 30 is a review unit. This means that the students will be assigned 25 words they have already encountered in units 25-29. I suggest studying them all even though only 18 will be selected this Friday. The students will find out which 18 when we take our weekly spelling test. Due to our extended spelling list, we will not have any vocabulary words this week.

Unit 30

Reading— This week we will continue to read The Little House in the Big Woods. Because our time in school now is limited, we will be reading select chapters only. This week, I plan to focus on Chapters 5 (“Sundays”) and 6 (“Two Big Bears”). Keep in mind that students are always welcome to take their books home and reread or get ahead should they choose.

Reading Log

Language—The class will continue to work on our personal narratives in Writer’s Workshop. In grammar, we will learn how to address an envelope. Please work with your child on learning his or her home address and how to properly write this. Many students do not know their street numbers and confuse it with their zip codes or phones numbers. This is just a good thing to know.

Religion: This week we will begin chapter 18, “Jesus Gives the Spirit of the Church.”

Social Studies: We will be going to the Ventura Museum to learn all about the Chumash people on Thursday!!!

Science: Our class will continue Chapter 1 this week, turning our attention to tundra and desert biomes. As always, we will visit the lab on Tuesday.

Have a great week!

All the Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
