Dear Third Grade Families,

Our Spring musical is fast approaching. Mark your calendars for Wednesday evening at 6:30 when the program is scheduled to begin. I will meet the students in the Hall where we will be sitting throughout the program. As for costumes, Mrs. Lyle has asked that the students wear dark colored pants (jeans are OK) with a light colored top (no t-shirts or logos please).

Last week’s class field trip to the Museum of Ventura County was a hit! Likewise, our trip to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History was a great experience for all. Thank you very much for getting in those permission slips on time (if not early!). Each of these museums has provided our students with a complimentary family ticket so that your child may guide you on a return visit. These can be found in your Tuesday work folders.

Reminder: School will not be in session this Friday as well as the following Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

This week we plan to study the following:

Math: This week we will focus on area and perimeter. Since these standards are covered more extensively in our Mastering the Common Core books, we will rely on these for practice. I plan to have a short area/perimeter quiz on Wednesday followed by a geometry test next Thursday.

Language Arts:

Spelling Unit 31 focuses on the VCCV pattern. We have worked on this as it relates to syllabication in class. In vocabulary, we will review words on the solar system.

Spelling & Vocabulary

Reading— This week we will continue to read The Little House in the Big Woods wrapping up Chapter 6, “Two Big Bears,” and begining Chapter 7, “The Sugar Snow.” In groups, we will learn more about school in the late 19thc. We will complete a common word puzzle that students Laura’s age were often challenged with and take a look at some of Laura’s experiences when she was a teacher at age 15!

Reading Log

Language—In writer’s workshop, we will work on story mapping as a way of organizing our “small moments” before we begin writing. Then, the students will be adding details to convert these maps into narratives.

Religion: This week we will continue chapter 18, “Jesus Gives the Spirit of the Church.” We will also be attending the Living Rosary in the Church this Tuesday at 11:10. All are invited and welcome.

Social Studies: We will begin to wrap up our study of the Chumash people and unpack what we learned at the Museum.

Science: Our class will finish Chapter 1 this week with a lab on aquatic habitats. We will have our Chapter 1 science test next Tuesday.

Have a great week!

All the Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
