Dear Third Grade Families,

This Wednesday (5/8) we will go on our second of three field trips, this time to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History for a museum tour, planetarium show and outdoor exploration. Students should wear their regular school uniforms with the exception of school appropriate bluejeans as our “outdoor exploration” promises to be hands-on. Students should also pack a sack lunch. We will not have snack on this day so I’d suggest that everyone have a healthy breakfast.

Mark your calendars for our final trip to the Museum of Ventura County where we will study the Chumash people on Thurs. 5/16. All permission slips should be turned in as soon as possible. As a general reminder, no student may attend a class field trip without a signed parent permission slip. Permission by parents may not be given over the telephone.

Congratulations to Jacob, Jessica and Maria for making their First Communion this Saturday!

This week we plan to study the following:

Math: This week we will continue with geometry focusing on problem solving with patterns, congruent/similar figures and symmetry. We will have a short quiz this Thursday.

Language Arts:

Spelling & Vocabulary— Spelling: Unit 29 – suffixes again! More specifically, _ness and _less. Vocabulary: This week in vocabulary, we will be focusing on words involving the Amazon River Basic (a perfect link with our study of biomes in science).

Spelling & Vocabulary

Reading— We will continue to read The Little House in the Big Woods. It is important that each child has a copy of the book. If your child does not have one, please take care of this as soon as possible. While last week we got to know the genre of historical fiction, this week we will be focusing on getting to know the characters and familiarizing ourselves with the setting a little more.

T-3 Reading Log

Language—The class will continue to work on our personal narratives in Writer’s Workshop. In grammar, we will learn how to address an envelope.

Religion: This week we will finish Chapter 17 with a quiz. Then we will move on to Chapter 18, “Jesus Gives the Spirit of the Church.”

Social Studies: We will finally continue with our study of the Chumash people in preparation for our field trip next week.

Science: Our class began Chapter 1 this week studying various biomes. More specifically, we looked at their weather patterns, animals and plant life. We are also studying animal adaptations as we learn how animals have changed to survive in various biomes.

Have a great week!

All the Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
