colored pencilsHello Third Grade Families,

It’s Catholic Schools Week! In honor of Wednesday’s Student Appreciation Day there will be free lunch (hamburgers) on this day for all. And since every day is student appreciation day around here, there will be reduced homework this week. Enjoy!

Math: We will begin Unit 6: Geometry with a review of lines, line segments and rays. We will also go over parallel and intersecting lines, angles and turns. Take some time this week to discuss the difference between clockwise and counter-clockwise turns with your child. Likewise, begin talking about the difference between whole, half and quarter turns. This will be a big part of Unit 6.

Reading: This week we will review several previously introduced strategies. Students are not required to read their usual 100 minutes. Instead read at your own leisure. You are still welcome though to log your leisure reading into Reading Glue.

Word Work: This week’s words can be found in your child’s planner. Our spelling test is scheduled for this Friday.

Grammar: Students will continue to learn all about verbs, this week focusing on Linking Verbs: Lesson 20. Go online to the Grammar Workshop website in order to access more practice and study opportunities.

Writer’s Workshop: Information Writing continues with more elaboration strategies for pumping up chapters (“sub-topics”). In addition to adding anecdotes and different punctuation, students will learn to add descriptions, labels, lists and vocabulary words. Later this week, we will learn to make connections within and across chapters with a focus on using transition words like also, another, because, then, which and in addition.

Science: We continue to learn all about the solar system! This week’s focus is the moon.

Social Studies: Students will learn about the Chumash people and culture.

Religion: The class will begin Chapter 13: Jesus Came to Give Life.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
