Dearest Third Grade Families!

It was a pleasure getting to meet so many of you last Wednesday evening for Back-to-School night. I look forward to a productive year full of good times and learning. We continue to add to our planners every day. Please remember to sign it every night.

This week is a busy one! Please see below for homework and other curricular information.

Math: The class will continue with Unit 1. This is a review of basic skills including sequencing and patterns, number grids, equivalent names and the language of chance events. There is no math homework (yet), but if you’d like to get a head start, I’d highly recommend reviewing double digit subtraction with regrouping — especially across zeroes (for example: 60-43 = )

Reading: This week we will begin with the reading homework, which is scheduled to go home in a special folder Tuesday afternoon. As a reminder, reading logs and fluency work will always be due the following Tuesday. Students are expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes at least five days a week. If you’re feeling ambitious though, or just really into a book or series and can’t put it down, feel free to go above and beyond by either logging in more time or days reading.

Language: We’ll continue on with Unit 1 of Writer’s Workshop! This week is all about telling stories rather than summarizing. We will focus on telling stories in scenes by writing what happened in small detail, bit by bit. Likewise, students will work on building stamina by setting and meeting goals for themselves as writers.

Spelling: The class is still getting back into the groove with Word Work. We will be using another set of “practice words”. Students will most likely be grouped next week.

Science: We will learn all about lab rules and safety!

Social Studies: All about communities.

Religion: What does Sacred Heart Church Mean to Me  — The class will consider this as we make posters for Sacred Heart Church’s 50th Anniversary!!!

Stay tuned for more info as the weeks roll forward.

All the Best,

Ms. Espinosa
