Hello 3rd Grade Families,

It was a pleasure meeting so many grandparents and special friends on Friday. We had a full classroom buzzing with family and friends. Oh what a day it was!

This week we have our first free dress day. All participating students should bring $1 (or more!). Funds collected will be donated to the LA Archdiocese Adopt-a-Family program. Please see the school website for more information on school appropriate free dress attire.

This week in class…

Math: We have our first math test on Tuesday. It will cover all Chapter 1 content. After that we will begin Chapter 2, “Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers.”

For IXL homework this week, please complete the following Skills…

C.8 Addition Patterns Over Increasing Place Values

D.6 Subtraction Patterns Over Increasing Place Values

P.3 Rounding Money Amounts

Reading: All students are required to read a total of 100 minutes (Monday night – Sunday night) each week. Log in to ReadingGlue.com with your username and password to Log those in. Each reading log entered should be a minimum of 20 minutes.

In class, we are practicing “Checking for Understanding” as we read. From here on out, I will be posting weekly “Parent Pipelines”. Parent Pipelines are one-sheet guides to help parents assist their children with their reading goals and strategies at home. Click here for this week’s Parent Pipeline.

Click here for this week’s fluency homework. This week is all about the Tasmanian Devil!

Spelling: Please look to last week’s entry (we wrote them in on Thursday) in your child’s planner for this week’s spelling words. The next spelling test will be on Friday and from here on out we plan to keep to a 5-day cycle with new words going out on Mondays and spelling tests every Friday. Go to SpellingCity.com for extra practice at home! Your child’s username and password can be found in the planner.

Vocabulary: We will take the Unit 1 test together in order to better understand the formatting, and begin working on Unit 2. Use the vocabulary workshop site to study the words and get a peek at Unit 2.

Grammar: Lesson 42 – Capitalizing Proper Nouns. Take advantage of the grammar workshop website for additional practice. Your child is welcome to take home his/her grammar book in order to see the Access Code. This is needed in order to establish your account.

Science: The class will revisit the lab as we continue our unit on energy. We will learn all about chemical energy!

Social Studies: The students will complete their short study of the continents with a craft activity.

Religion: The Chapter 2 quiz is tomorrow. Click here for the study guide!

Picture Day is fast approaching. This year, families are encouraged to order their pictures online. See the school website for details.

Have a great week!

Ms. Espinosa
