Hello Third Grade Families!

This week in class…

Math: We continue this week with Chapter 2, now turning our focus to using the partial-sums algorithm as well as subtraction with the trade-first method. These were introduced in second grade; however, in case you need a refresher on how these methods work, below are links to a couple videos that may help explain:

Knowing the partial-sums algorithm will come in especially handy when we make it to multi-digit multiplication, which relies on the same series of steps.

For IXL homework this week, please complete the following Third Grade Skills…

P.1 Rounding to the nearest 10 and 100

P.6 Estimate sums

Reading: Students are doing an outstanding job of reading 100+ minutes every week. Bravo! Keep turning in those logs every Tuesday.

This week in class we move from making higher-level predictions to retelling stories. As you read, try and have your child retell the story to you. A solid retell will tell what happened (including the most important parts), in order with a clear how and why. Note: this skill is part of our guided reading assessments and is well worth regular practice.

Word Work: New words went home on Monday. Our next spelling test will be on Friday. Remember that students are welcome to use Spelling City, or any other method to study. As you learn, be sure to focus on the pattern though rather than memorizing specific words. The ultimate goal is for students to be able to spell other, similar words using those same patterns.

Grammar: Last week was a review of nouns. This week we build on that through a review of common and proper nouns. If you have a moment, I would encourage you to take some time over the course of the week to get some extra review on via the Grammar Workshop website. We are on lessons 9 and 10.

Science: This week is all about states of matter: solid, liquid gas.

Religion: The class will now move on to Chapter 2: God Gives Us Gifts.

Have a great week!
