Dearest Third Grade Families!

It was a pleasure getting to meet so many of you last Wednesday evening for Back-to-School night. I look forward to a productive year full of good times and learning. We continue to add to our planners every day. Please remember to review it every night for additional notices and notes.

This week is a busy one! Please see below for homework and other curricular information.

Important Dates:

*Next Monday is a school holiday. Happy Labor Day!

*Next Wednesday is picture day! Please remember to either order your photos online or return the order form on the 6th.

Homework:

Last week students were to bring in a photo of them reading in a favorite spot. These photos will go up soon and are due no later than this Friday. If you haven’t turned yours in, please do so by then.

Math: The class will continue with Unit 1. This is a review of basic skills including sequencing and patterns, number grids, equivalent names and the language of chance events. There is no math homework (yet), but if you’d like to get a head start, I’d highly recommend reviewing double digit subtraction with regrouping — especially across zeroes (for example: 60-43 = )

Reading: This week we will begin with the reading homework, which is scheduled to go home in a special folder Tuesday afternoon. As a reminder, reading logs and fluency work will always be due the following Tuesday. Students are expected to read for a minimum of 20 minutes at least five days a week, or a total of 100 minutes across the week. If you’re feeling ambitious though, or just really into a book or series and can’t put it down, feel free to go above and beyond by either logging in more time or days reading.

Curricular Spotlight:

This week, we jump right into science! We have discussed what it means to be a scientist, what their jobs and responsibilities require, and how we can continue to be successful ones in third grade! We have also spent a great deal of time prepping ourselves for science labs and discussing the importance of science lab safety and rules. Later this week, we will dive right into unit 1, Survival of Living Things, focusing on the adaptations that organisms have to land and water.

Have a great rest of the week!

Ms. Espinosa and Miss Poindexter
