Dear Third Grade Families,

October is the month of the Rosary and this Wednesday we will be attending the Living Rosary at 2:00 in the church. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own Rosaries. I only ask that they do not bring one that is especially valuable. I also suggest that students who bring rosaries from home bring them in a small box or Ziploc bag so they do not get tangled or broken in backpacks or desks. Our class has been studying the Rosary for the past two weeks so this will be a great supplement to our in-class work.

Wednesday is picture make-ups for any students who missed Picture Day.

Thursday morning we will have an all-school assembly in honor of the Hats Off For Cancer cause. I encourage all students to bring a new hat or cap if possible to donate to a child with cancer.

On this same morning we will also have the California Shake Out earthquake drill. Please take a moment this week to speak with your child about earthquake preparedness and safety. We will surely be discussing this in class as well.

Our class has done an outstanding job returning our library books on time this year. Keep up the good work and remind your child to bring his/her library book to school Thursday morning so two new ones can be checked out.

Finally, a big THANK YOU goes out to those parents who have been so helpful with take-home work, craft making and supply collecting. Teaching is a team effort and your help makes it a lot easier (and more fun)!

As for our studies, here is what we have lined up for this week:

Math: We will take our Chapter 3 math test Tuesday morning. Then, we will begin a chapter on time and money as well as using a calendar. Please review counting change and telling time with your child. This chapter moves through skills quickly and operates under the assumption that students have already had a great deal of practice in this in first and second grades.

Language Arts: We will begin our new writing genre this week – letter writing! This is often a favorite among students. We will also begin to wrap up our study of pronouns, continue learning lower case cursive letters (b, o and w) and begin the next theme in our reading anthologies: “It’s Magic.”

Science: We will begin Chapter 7, a continuation of the physical sciences.

Social Studies: We will continue to study the difference between our city, state, country, continent and hemispheres.

Religion: We will wrap up our study of the Rosary this week with a quiz on Thursday. Look for the Rosary Diagram in your child’s homework this week. It is due on Friday with the Reading Log. I also included a “Study Guide” on the back for students to review as they prepare for our quiz on Thursday. I hope this helps.

Have a great week!

All the Best,

Mrs. Espinosa
