Dear Second Grade Parents,

Grandparents Day was spent with a little dancing, conversations and games. Thank you to all the grandparents and special friends who came to spend some time with the children.

Half of our second graders started working on their Flat Person!  The other half will begin this week. We are in the beginning stages of tracing their Flat Person. I hope the Flat Person host search is coming along.  Please have the host and donation turned in by Friday, September 14, or sooner.

On Wednesday, September 12th , will be picture day. Students are to wear their uniforms. Money and order forms are due on this day.  Please let me know if you need an order form.

Here’s a look at our week…

Reading Log & Homework:  Click on the red “homework & reading log” word to print out assignment.   An additional part of their homework is to study for their spelling test, Unit 3.  They may go onto spelling city to help practice words.

All papers must be done in pencil and stapled together so it may be  turned in on Friday.

RELIGION: We pray the sign of the Cross; vocabulary:  crucifix;  God Gives New Life in Baptism; vocabulary:  Confirmation, faith, original sin, sacrament;  The Church Welcomes Us;  vocabulary:  godparents, paschal candle;  We belong to Jesus’ Church;  vocabulary:  bishop, priest

LANGUAGE ARTS:  Unit 3 in spelling begins the study of long vowel words with the “vowel-consonant-e” spelling pattern; phonics review will include more short vowels and the “vccv” pattern; vocabulary development; sentence writing; handwriting practice; creative writing; rhyming; dictation; reading for comprehension (fantasy and realism) and fluency as we begin the story “Julius.”

MATH:  We will finish with addition and begin subtraction review.  In addition we will be adding three addends using the associative rule.

Subtraction will include strategies such as counting back on a number line, using a tens frame,subtract from number to 20 & problem solving.

SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE: Groups and communities/ Plant life cycles
