Week of November 21, 2011
Dear Second Grade Families,
Thank you to second grade families who volunteered for primary centers on Friday. Your help is appreciated and we could not have done this without you!
Our week is a short one sprinkled with Thanksgiving activities and lessons. Last week we wrote our thanks and decorated feathers of thanksgiving to adorn our official Sacred Heart School Turkey. He will be part of the entrance procession for 8:30 Mass on Wednesday. Please join us if your schedule allows. Classroom jobs will change and a new Student of the Week will resume when we return from our holiday.
FIELD TRIP: We will be taking a walking field trip to the fire station behind our school. Mr. Thom Hoffman will be our guide. This will be our introduction to our next story ”A Trip to the Fire House” in our reading series about community and neighborhoods.
FLAT PEOPLE UPDATE: We will send out Thanksgiving cards and letters today to our hosts. While we are receiving some mail daily, your child’s host might need encouraging and a reminder phone call from you to send mail to school for your child. Daily mail is fun!!
READING LOG: Just a few reminders about this weekly assignment. Please follow all directions when completing this. This includes name, number, date for each day, title, author, story evaluation, questions for each day, and parent signature. This weeks Reading log will be due Wednesday. Keep reading!!!
SHOPPING: If you are out and about shopping this holiday vacation, remember Teddy Bear Day is coming Tuesday, December 6. The food drive for The St. Vincent de Paul Society will begin Monday, November 28. For the Christmas program all second graders will need a pair of reindeer antlers for a musical number. Now is a good time to find them since it is still early in the season.
IN THE CLASSROOM
RELIGION: Thank you, God.
READING: We are going to finish up the extra comprehension practice for “Chinatown”; Thanksgiving stories.
LANGUAGE ARTS: More nouns and Thanksgiving activities.
SPELLING: More in class review. Since it is a short week, no spelling test this week. We will begin Unit 13 after Thanksgiving.
MATH: Problem solving, double digits: place value, expanded form, and number words, lots of adding and subtraction practice. (And Thanksgiving math…can you believe it???).
SOCIAL STUDIES/SCIENCE: Pilgrims, Mayflower, and Plymouth Rock.
Have a good week and a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday sharing time with family and friends. Make some memories!
God Bless,
Second Grade Teachers
