Hi there 4th Grade Families! I hope you all enjoyed the 4-day weekend as we took time to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and reflect on the things he taught us.

We are back to work in 4th Grade and are definitely at “the meat” of our year as Mrs. Benner shared in the Family Envelope.

Important Dates:

  • Hot lunch catering is closed until Friday.
  • Friday, January 20: Spelling Bee – 10:15am in the Hall
  • Friday, January 20: 2p dismissal

Homework:

  • IXL Math: (Remember, the goal is NOT 100 — do your best)
  • 20-30 minutes of reading, 5 times a week – 5 Reading Responses (Tuesday-Tuesday)
    • Please have students read NONFICTION — they have checked out books from our library and continue to do so if needed

Our Week:

  • Math: This week we continue to focus on MULTIPLICATION. We are practicing the Partial Products method and getting the hang of it more and more each day. This week in IXL, students are practicing their multiplication facts and applying what they know to multiply larger numbers.
  • Reading: In our non-fiction reading this week, we are continuing to research our assigned weather extremes. Students have assigned roles within their groups and are practicing taking structured notes as they read. By next week, students will be teaching the class about their weather extreme!
  • Writing: We are working on creating thesis statements to build our essays upon. Students will start structuring their writing to establish strong, personal works. This will be a process, but a very important step in our writing this unit.
  • Word Work: We continue practicing our spelling patterns in small groups. Word lists can be found in your child’s planner from last week. We are all using the same words from last week due to the short week. Spelling tests are scheduled for this Friday.
This Friday, we have our school-wide Spelling Bee! We will cheer on our 5 4th grade representatives as they compete!
  • Religion: We will discuss Saints and how we can look to them as examples for how to worship.
  • Social Studies: This week, we start to wrap up our studies of CA Natives.

Let’s have a great week!

Ms. Schmaeling
