5th Grade Academics

RELIGION

We are still working on understanding the parts of Mass and have moved on to the Liturgy Of the Eucharist. We will still discuss our Lenten journey and participate in weekly Stations of the Cross led by our 8th graders.

MATH

We continue to review and practice US Traditional division with remainders and decimals.

SCIENCE

We are continuing our study of matter by studying properties. We will have lots of science labs this week; Tues – volume of irregular-shaped objects with water displacement, Wed. – density column and Friday – we will try Oobleck once again.

Reading: We continue reading “Sign of the Beaver” and learning about life in the 1700s. This week, we’ll focus on chapters 10-12, identifying figurative language, summarizing chapters, and including vocabulary, context clues, and illustrations. We completed our quiz for chapters 1-6 on Tuesday.

Our focus in writing is being thorough with our summaries.

Word Work:  Test today for all groups. We received our differentiated sorts this week. Students are to write them in cursive in their planners.

Social Studies

Thirteen colonies continues to be our main focus. In addition, we will be doing some practice research for New York this week. Next week, students will be assigned a state. I will send more information to families about our class project by the end of next week. The students are excited about this project as I am.

Assignments/Upcoming Tests: Please check the agenda for daily and weekly assignments. Students will have math review work either in paper form or IXL skill assignments. In Addition, reading passages will be sent weekly.

We will have an IXL quiz on division (using the US Traditional method) on Thursday.

Science test on the properties of matter on Friday

Homework is due every Monday for Reading. Students must complete all areas to receive full credit for H.W. They will receive their new homework on Tuesday.

If you have any questions, please be sure to send us an email.

Upcoming Events

Wednesday: Stations of the Cross at 1:50. Stations of the Cross led by our 8th graders is a wonderful chance for some personal reflection. The 8th graders always do such a beautiful job. Please join us if your schedule permits.

Friday: School Mass at 8:30 AM and a 2:00 dismissal.

We sent home classwork last week, so be sure to ask your child to show you their work with their current grade for all subjects. We plan on sending their work next Tuesday, so be on the lookout.
