FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER
NOTE FROM MRS. VAZQUEZ:
I can’t believe we’ve been in school for a little over a month. We have worked hard during these last few weeks to get our routine down. I add something new every week which is exciting for all. 🙂 We will have Ms. Spooner join us after recess for our first art lesson with her.
HOMEWORK
On Wednesday, I will be sending home the classwork folder. You will find work that was completed in class. If you have any work that says INC or Incomplete, please return as soon as possible.
Homework is always do on Tuesday. I will begin passing out new homework on Tuesday.
- Reading Log 15+ min. daily (Students must write their own name, write tally marks, & write minutes)
- Math IXL.com Skill A.9 (100%)
- Language IXL.com Skill E.2 (100%)
- Math/Language Worksheet (Please make sure your child colors the worksheet if needed/write their own name)
- SIGHT WORDS Please read the parent letter in the homework folder. How to Practice: Practice Level 1 sight words daily for 3-4 minutes. I am not requiring a signature or log for this homework. I will see their hard work through a monthly assessment on sight words. Start off at Level 1 and phrases. Do not move on until your child knows the first 10 sight words and phrases. Sight words are to be known by sight in 3 seconds or less. If they begin sounding out, it does not count as knowing the sight word fluently. Have fun! (Use playdough to make words, wikki sticks, sand, index cards, magic words (white crayon & markers) or have them write the words).
Reading Log: Students are to read or be read to for 15 minutes daily. Please have your child write their name at the top of the reading log and fill in tally marks.
A SNEAK PEEK AT OUR ACADEMICS
Language Arts: We are almost done with all our letter sound review. We continue our printing practice.
This week in Reader’s Workshop, we are building our reading stamina and learning to reread books.
Please continue working on doing something at the end of a book.
- Reread your favorite part of the story.
- Retell the story to yourself.
- Reread the whole book
- Think about what you read.
In writing, we began writing our small moments. Ask your child, what they wrote about.
Math: We are playing our two games we learned last week.
Religion: We will take our first quiz together. Students will be guided through the process of taking a religion test in 1st grade!
Science: We continue read and learn about the plant life cycle.
REMINDERS
- We will return our library books on Tuesday and check out a new one. 🙂 I will be increasing to checking out two books by next month.
- Remember PE uniforms on Tuesday and Thursday! Please make sure that long hair is pulled back and all students are wearing tennis shoes that they can tie themselves.
- As a reminder, if your child cannot tie their own shoes, your student must wear Velcro shoes, especially on P.E. days. Please see our school handbook for more information regarding dress code.
- We have Mass every Friday. All families are welcome to attend at 8:30. Every first Friday of the month, we have a “family mass” where children participate in mass including our friends (3-8) in choir.
