5th Grade Academics

RELIGION

We are learning about vocations in Religion this week – being single, married, or choosing the religious life.

MATH

Last week, we took it a little slow…and practiced skills we would need dealing with fractions. This week it is all about fractions. We are working on different ways to find common denominators so that we can add and subtract fractions…then on to multiplying and dividing them….hoping to end the year with everyone at least not “hating” fractions.

SCIENCE

We continued studying our Earth…and its resources. Not only did we learn about renewable and nonrenewable resources but the positive and negative impacts of using those resources.

ELA

Reading: We will complete Bud, Not Buddy by the end of this week. We will take our test next week to complete our novel study.

Our writing focus continues to be persuasive, with a focus on hook sentences and summaries.

Word Work:  New sorts for all. All students are working with Latin roots and Greek words. Students are required to know the meaning of the Latin or Greek part/word. They have been playing games to help them review and/or learn their sort. We will have a review test on all the Latin/Greek words or parts next week.

Social Studies

We continue simultaneously working on two things: the American Revolution (Sugar Act) and making a slide for a state report on Google Slides. If possible, kindly ask your child to show you their state presentation slideshow. They will start presenting on Thursday.
