5th Grade Academics

RELIGION

We are still learning about vocations in Religion this week – focusing on matrimony and Holy Orders.

MATH

This week it is all about fractions. We are working on adding fractions and mixed numbers. We also have STAR Testing this week. Math on Tuesday and Reading on Thursday.

SCIENCE

The kids requested learning about atoms …so atoms it is! And you can’t talk about atoms unless you talk about the periodic table…and all its “magic.” We introduced the periodic table, and we will spend some time learning how to “read” the information and then move on to the structure of atoms – using the periodic table.

ELA

Reading: We finished our novel on Friday. We will prepare for our Thursday test by analyzing character traits and themes from Bud, Not Buddy.

Our writing focus continues to be persuasive, with a focus on the body of paragraphs. We will begin typing and editing our writing. Students will improve on their drafts as we learn new ways of writing.

Word Work:  All students are working with Latin roots and Greek words. Students are required to know the meaning of the Latin or Greek part/word. They have been playing games to help them review and/or learn their sort. We will have a review test on all the Latin/Greek words or parts on Wednesday of next week. Students need extra time to master the definitions of their sort.

Social Studies

State presentations were fantastic. We will review state capitals and continue studying the American Revolution: Stamp Act, Committees of Correspondence, and Townshend Acts.
