Dear Parents, November 26, 2012
I hope that you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. A big thank you to all those who attended our Readers Theatre of The First Thanksgiving! The children did a wonderful job and truly enjoyed themselves. The next few weeks are very busy and filled with much excitement.
We are starting theme 4 in our reading series this week. The theme is “Family & Friends”. Our reading strategy is “summarizing”. After reading a story, we should be able to retell the important parts of the story. While reading, we pay attention to the main idea and the important details in the story and this will help us retell the story. Our comprehension skill this week is “drawing conclusions”. While reading, we pay attention to what is happening in the story not only for summarizing but also for drawing conclusions. Thinking critically, and being able to conclude or make a true generalization from a story will help us become good, strategic readers. Our phonics focus this week is words with ‘l’ clusters. We will also review contractions with ‘s, consonant ‘r’ clusters and short /o/ words in our reading. Our grammar focus continues to be on the naming and action parts of sentences. This week, our spelling words are from unit 14 – clusters with ‘l’. As we begin our second trimester please remind your student to watch their letters- making sure they are capital only when needed and are not backwards! Our spelling test this week will be the first one that will be graded with these guidelines.
In math, we will begin Chapter 4 which first focuses on sorting, making tally charts, and picture graphs. Science finds us itching to get back into the lab to take a closer look at what we discovered in our owl pellets last week and pushing forward as we study environments. In social studies we will review our unit on families and take our test late in the week. Within religion we will learn about God’s promise of a Savior.
Reminders and Announcements for the week:
- Please remind your child to bring their library book to school on Tuesday so that they may check out a new one.
- Wednesday is a $1 free dress day
- Friday is Primary Centers and a noon dismissal!
