Dear Third Grade Families,
Congratulations to Jacob, Jessica and Maria for completing the sacrament of First Reconciliation last Wednesday! We look forward to your upcoming First Communion.
In more exciting news, our class finalists have been selected for the school Speech Contest. Representing the third grade will be: Sophia, Jessica, Diego, Aliyah and Christian. All finalists from grades K-5 will recite before a panel of judges in the library on April 23rd. Congratulations and best of luck to all!
Remember to mark your calendars for our 3 upcoming field trips:
1) The Museum of Ventura County where we will study the Chumash people on Thurs. 5/16. This final permission slip will go home in this week’s Tuesday work folders.
2) The Santa Barbara Natural History Museum’s planetarium and “outdoor exploration” on Wednesday 5/8.
3) The Ojai Storyteller’s Festival (a schoolwide field trip) on Friday 5/3.
As a general reminder, no student may attend a class field trip without a signed parent permission slip. Permission by parents may not be given over the telephone.
Math: This week we will wrap up chapter 4 with customary units of length as well as temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. The students will be tested on measurement this Thursday. The test will cover: measuring elapsed time, word problems involving mass/volume given in the same unit and dividing inches into halves and fourths on a ruler. It will also include some general measurement facts (for example: If one foot has 12 inches, how many inches are in a yard?).
Language Arts:
Spelling & Vocabulary— Spelling: Unit 27 – prefixes! More specifically, -re and –un. Vocabulary: This week in vocabulary, we will be focusing on words involving eating out. (Yum!)
Reading— This week we will continue our short unit on poetry. We will be reading selections from Something Big Has Been Here. Please make sure your child has a copy of the text. We will study poetry vocabulary including but not limited to: stanza, line, line break, alliteration, rhythm and rhyme scheme. We will also take a closer look at descriptive poetry. Finally, we plan spend some time determining the meaning of words in context as much of Jack Prelutzky’s work is rich in vocabulary.
Language—The class will be working on the early prewriting stages of our personal narratives. We will focus on writing “small moments” rather than “tell-all” stories. Students will see examples of exemplary student work and should challenge themselves to write for longer, more sustained periods.
Religion: This week we will finish Chapter 16: “Jesus is Risen.” There will be a quiz on Thursday.
Social Studies: This week we will finally begin our study of the Chumash people, the American Indians of our local region!
Science: We will conclude Chapter 5 with a chapter review. Plan for a test next Monday 4/29.
